AFRICAN VULTURES; NATURE'S CLEAN UP CREW.

The first Saturday of September marks International Vulture Awereness day, a day meant to spread awareness and celebrate these lovely birds.

Africa is a home to 11 species of vulture species,each playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. The continent hosts iconic species such as the White-backed Vulture, Rüppell's Vulture, Hooded Vulture, Lappet-faced Vulture, and Cape Vulture, among others. These birds, often misunderstood, are the unsung heroes of the African wilderness.

1. Rüppell's Vulture are master fliers, they hold the record for the highest altitude flight, soaring at an incredible height of 37,000 feet, higher than Mount Everest!

2. Vultures are known for their ability to consume carrion, preventing the spread of diseases by cleaning up animal remains that would otherwise rot and pollute the environment.

3. These birds have extremely acidic stomachs, allowing them to digest bones and other tough materials that would be harmful to other animals.

4. Many vulture species are highly social and can often be seen in large groups around a carcass. This behaviour not only ensures food for many but also strengthens social bonds.

The Dangers African Vultures Face
